Los Angeles, California - USA
Winners Announced: November 2010
In the Spotlight this week is the Champion Screenwriting Competition (CSC), a Los Angeles-based competition dedicated to boosting and, appropriately, championing the careers of promising screenwriters.
With the motto "Winning is just the beginning," Champion works hard to establish its winning writers as tomorrow's working screenwriters. To this end, the lucky winners work with a marketing consultant, script consultant, career coach, and proofreader to hone their scripts to get them picture-perfect. What's more, the competition grants more than $40,000 USD worth of cash and prizes, including a Grand Prize of $10,000. The top three scripts will be presented to numerous production companies, agencies, and management companies for consideration, while the low budget feature horror prize includes an option or writing deal.
All Top-20 feature writers receive prizes worth more than $1,000 including ten pitches from Virtual Pichfest, an ItsOnTheGrid membership, two career coaching sessions with Rhona Berens, and a seat in the week long Champion Lab with founder Jim Mercurio, a thought-provoking, dynamic master class workshop guaranteed to push creative boundaries. Writers who submit more than three feature-length screenplays are entered into a random drawing for a seat in the Champion Lab. Additionally, there are $1,500 in prizes for shorts, including a $500 cash prize for short short screenplays (three pages or less), plus development, notes, a gift certificate to The Writers Store, and a John Truby genre DVD.

MISSION AND OBJECTIVE
The mission of CSC is to champion its winning writers, prepare them for Hollywood, and work toward establishing their careers by taking their work from the top of the competition to the top of Hollywood producers' reading piles.
MORE ABOUT THE COMPETITION
Champion's $10,000 Grand Prize is a huge gesture toward establishing it as one of the world's largest screenwriting contests that can devote time, money, resources, and the support of several talented mentors to change the lives of talented aspiring writers. A 2009 quarter finalist, Solomon G, attests to the possibilities: "Jim liked my script and connected me with a producer...the producer optioned my script and now it looks like my script will be produced later this year. I am incredibly excited, and I have Jim and the Champion Screenwriting Competition to thank for all of this success."
Competition founder Jim Mercurio has vetted more than 10,000 feature screenplays, and has also taught screenwriting to thousands of writers, with clients ranging from beginners to Oscar-nominated writers to A-list filmmakers. He has helped many contest winners get their first paid writing assignments and the attention of the industry. The Champion Lab he offers was one of the highlights for many of last year's winners, as one noted: "Seeing a movie - or better yet, your own script - through Jim's eyes is like playing a round of golf with Arnold Palmer." Another alum describes the workshop as "the Rosetta Stone of screenwriting," and adds, "Even to a seasoned writer, this class will allow new gears in their brain to turn."
To take advantage of these career-boosting resources, submit your short or feature screenplay to Champion Screenwriting Competition today!
